Q : I had a hemorrhoid operation 15months ago and I am still soreinside the rectum, is this normal and will it ever get any better. Is there anything I can do to help this. I am scared to go back to the doctor who did it as I think he is knife happy. I went in to hospital to have what Iwas told was a polyp removed and woke up to be told I had a hemorrhoidectomy. I got terribly constipated and found myself strainingbadly to pass bowel motions following the op and I am sure this has nothelped. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Answer : Hello Gloria. Hemorrhoidectomy does cause some pain and soreness, but in most cases this is temporary. During hemorrhoidectomy, incisions are made in the tissue around the hemorrhoid. The swollen vein inside the hemorrhoid is tied off to prevent bleeding, and the hemorrhoid is removed. In very rare cases the side effects of hemorrhoidectomy could be: Narrowing (stenosis) of the anal canal Recurrence of hemorrhoidsAn abnormal passage (fistula) that forms between the anal or rectalcanal and another areaIn most cases the procedure is successful, however the long term success of hemorrhoidectomy depends largely on your ability to make changes in your daily bowel habits that will make passing stool seasier. If you are still constipated then it is not going to help even if you had your hemorrhoids removed. Passing a hard stool shears and tears the inside tissues of the rectum causing them to swell or pain.Add a lot of fibre to your diet, eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, drink plenty of water, exercise regulaly, and add a stool softener (like wheat husk) to your diet. If you are uncomfortable going to the same doctor, then why don't you consult another doctor toget a second opinion. It is best to get a specialist's opinion on why you don't feel better even after the surgery.
