Stool Softeners - Hemorrhoids
Stool softeners help easier bowel movements and relieve the strain and constipation that people with hemorrhoids undergo. Stool softeners are available in different forms- as capsules, tablet, liquid and syrup. The most common stool softener available is docusate sodium (colace) which allows more incorporation of water and fat into stool making it soft. It eases the strain that people with hemorrhoids undergo during bowel movements. However you should be cautious about the side effects in intestine like abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. It is important to inform your doctor or the pharmacist if you are allergic to any drugs to avoid complications later. Also it should be told if you are taking prescription or non prescription medications like aspiring or vitamins. Mineral oils should be avoided while taking stool softeners. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding it should be told to your physician for precautionary measures.
You should follow the physician’s directions or the prescription labels when you to take the dosage. Capsules and tablets can be had with water. If the medicine is in liquid form( not syrups) you may mix it with milk or fruit juice to compensate the bitter taste. There could be mild side effects stomach and intestinal cramps, upset stomach, skin rashes and sometimes vomiting and fever. There could also be sudden changes in the bowel habits or the stool may remain hard. In this case, it is advisable to see the doctor.
